Tuscaloosa to Offer Virtual Learning for High Schoolers with Enough Interest
City schools in Tuscaloosa will offer a new all-virtual online learning program for qualified high school students if enough families express interest this month.
A spokesperson for Tuscaloosa City Schools shared details about the new TCS Virtual Program on Monday, which could launch in the 2026 academic year this fall.

This new flexible offering is designed to serve up to 250 high school students who live within city limits and are zoned for a TCS school. Those who are accepted will remain students of their zoned school, but will complete their coursework online.
System leaders said the new offering will combine live instruction with local, certified TCS teachers and asynchronous coursework, built into flexible schedules tailored to students' needs.
As students at their zoned high schools, those accepted into this program remain eligible for extracurricular activities, including athletics, marching bands, and specialty clubs.
They will also retain access to other valued TCS resources, such as career-technical training at TCTA and extremely low-cost dual enrollment at the University of Alabama, Stillman College, and Shelton State.
“This initiative reflects our commitment to providing families with flexibility and high-quality learning options,” Superintendent Mike Daria said. “The TCS Virtual Program allows students to benefit from online instruction while remaining connected to the extracurricular activities, supports and school community of their home high school.”
TCS is accepting applications now through the end of January - submissions will close at 3 p.m. on Jan. 30, 2026.
"The launch of the TCS Virtual Program in August 2026 is dependent on at least 125 qualified students being accepted into the program," they said in their announcement.
