Tuscaloosa Man Stabbed to Death Saturday Night, Cousin Arrested

A Tuscaloosa man is dead and his cousin faces a murder charge after a stabbing late Saturday night in the West End, according to the Violent Crimes Unit.

VCU Co-Commander Captain Marty Sellers told local media that the victim, 46-year-old Robert Dewayne Hollie, was found suffering from multiple stab wounds on 25th Street around 11 p.m. Saturday. He was transported to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Sellers said the VCU began an investigation and learned from witnesses that Hollie had come to the residence to help fix a door.

When he arrived, the suspect, Derrick Dewayne Prewitt, 49, reportedly immediately became aggressive and attacked him.

Prewitt told police he was acting in self-defense, but Sellers said the evidence did not support that claim.

Prewitt, who is Hollie's cousin, later turned himself in at the Tuscaloosa County Jail. He was charged with murder and is being held without bond under Aniah's Law.

By the count of the Thread staff, it is the 11th homicide the VCU has investigated in Tuscaloosa County this year.
