Political Party Primary Runoffs: Voter Information
Polls are open for today's statewide political party primary runoffs. They will remain open until 7:00 tonight.
On the Ballot
Today's balloting is the second of four election days this year and the results will be significant. Offices from the U.S. Senate to Lt. Governor, State Attorney General, Ag and Industry Commissioner and Public Service Commission Place #2 are on the Republican ballot. The only Democrat runoff is for the U.S. Senate.
The election will also be a test of the coattails of President Trump who has endorsed candidates in the Republican races. The race with the biggest Trump test is for U-S Senate where the candidate he endorsed Rep. Barry Moore has seen former Navy Seal challenger Jared Hudson close the gap since finishing second on May 19th.
There is one runoff on the Democratic Party ballot with Dakarai Larriiett and Everett Wess vying for their party’s U-S Senate Nomination.
On the GOP ballot there are five runoffs. Wes Allen and John Wahl for Lt. Governor, Jared Hudson and Barry Moore square off in the U.S. Senate, the Attorney General nomination is between Jay Mitchell and Katherine Robertson, It is Corey Hill and Christina Woerner McInnis in the Ag and Industry Commissioner’s race and PSC Place 2 incumbent Jim Beeker is trying to fight off a significant challenge from former commission Jim Zeigler.
The third election will be primaries for the 1st, 2nd, 6th and 7th Congressional Districts in the Aug. 11 special election. The General Election is in November.
A low voter turnout is expected despite the importance of the offices on the ballot.
There are a few local runoffs on ballots:
Fayette County Runoffs
Fayette County voters will see two Republican runoffs:
- Revenue Commissioner: Carrie Edmonson vs. incumbent Jeananne Edwards
- Schools Superintendent: Jeremy Madden vs. Steve Sawyer
Greene County Commission Runoffs
Democratic voters will decide:
- District 1: Larry Smith vs. incumbent Garria Spencer
- District 3: Latasha Johnson vs. Jacqueline Stewart
Walker County Sheriff Runoff
Republicans will choose between Jason Akins and J.C. Poe Jr. after incumbent Sheriff Nick Smith was eliminated in the May primary. Because no Democrat qualified for the race, Tuesday's winner is expected to become the county's next sheriff.
