Celebrate Love And Local Heroes At The Montgomery VFD Valentines Fish Fry
Why is it important to support fund raising events sponsored by area volunteer fire departments (VFD)? If you examine their mission and dedication you will understand. If you have a VFD nearby all you have to do is look at how much money having a VFD can save you on insurance.
The Montgomery Volunteer Fire Department (16780 Mormon Rd, Northport) is hosting a Valentine’s Day fish fry fundraiser Saturday, February 14 from 4:00pm until 6:00pm. The event is one of their most important fundraisers each year.

So why do VFDs like Montgomery need to conduct fundraisers? Well, look in the mirror, it's for their neighbors like you.
While paid volunteer fire departments get most of the attention and money, they are in the minority in the United States and here in Alabama. There are 2,785 all-career fire departments across the U.S. and they are critical to property and life protection. Just as important are the 18,873 all volunteer departments that do the same job but on shoe-string budgets. 70% of all firefighters in the U.S are volunteers. (National Fire Protection Association - NFPA).
Residents of rural areas understand the importance of volunteer departments. NFPA reports show that volunteer firefighters save localities an estimated $46.9 billion per year. Their firefighters, paramedics and EMT meet national standards and that saves lives and property.
Just like paid departments, volunteers respond to fires, emergency medical incidents, vehicle accidents, terrorist and active shooter events, natural disasters, hazardous materials incidents, water rescue emergencies, high-angle and confined space emergencies, and other general public service calls.
Volunteer fire departments often operate with hand-me-down equipment and out of inadequate fire houses. Worse yet, while call volume has risen across the country, the number of volunteer fire fighters have declined.
For a Valentine's Day celebration with meaning, support the Montgomery VFD fish fry fundraiser. Attendees can purchase two adult fish plates for $25. Regular plates are normally priced at $15 for an adult and $7 for a child.
