A downtown Tuscaloosa bar that has been slinging drinks and hosting locals for more than a decade will permanently close after their A Day Crawfish Boil this Saturday.

Tavern 1831 opened in 2009 or so, replacing Johnny's Pub and Grub at 2304 Fourth Street, but since 2014 has been operated by a different team, led by longtime downtown business owners Cliff and Anne Clark.

1831 developed a loyal crowd of regular customers by becoming a self-described "upscale dive bar" where locals felt at home and knew each other and the staff.

Events were held regularly for holidays, TV watch parties and more, and often featured free food and happy hour prices.

After more than a decade of ownership and more than 15 years after it opened, 1831 will permanently close after this weekend.

"We have decided that our A Day Crawfish boil on Saturday, April 12th, will be our last day at 1831," the Clarks wrote in a Facebook post. "We are sad but, at the same time, excited to put more time and energy into our other downtown business. We hope you can make it out to say hello, enjoy a cold beer, and eat some mudbugs! It was a good run, and we couldn’t thank everyone enough."

The Clarks still operate the music-themed Decades Pub & Grub a few doors down from 1831 and offer some of the best sandwiches you can find downtown.
