ALDI Confirms Tuscaloosa County Winn Dixie Will Close for Conversion
Another Winn Dixie store in Tuscaloosa County will close early next year and convert to an ALDI after the German supermarket chain acquired Southeastern Grocers in 2023.
The acquisition had no immediate impact, but earlier this year, the Winn Dixie on McFarland Boulevard in Northport shut its doors and is still in the process of becoming an ALDI store.
This weekend, word began to spread on social media that the Winn-Dixie store at 9750 Highway 69 South near Shelton State Community College would do the same in early 2025.
On Monday, an ALDI spokesperson confirmed the news in an email to the Tuscaloosa Thread.
"We’re converting some Winn-Dixie stores to the ALDI format to better support the communities we serve. Customers can expect a quick, easy shopping experience with great products at the lowest possible prices. Our smaller stores are stocked with only the items customers need so they can get in and out, and our award-winning exclusive brands help shoppers save up to 40% on their groceries without sacrificing quality," they wrote. "We can confirm the Winn-Dixie store located at 9750 Highway 69 South, Tuscaloosa, AL will close for renovations in March. The store will reopen to the community as an ALDI over the next several months."
The new store will be the fourth in the county, joining original ALDI locations in Tuscaloosa and Northport and the still-being-converted McFarland Winn Dixie.
"While this store is temporarily closed, we continue to proudly serve the residents of Tuscaloosa at our other area stores. We thank our customers for their years of loyalty at this location and look forward to seeing them soon as a new ALDI," the spokesperson said.
"Associates at this location have the opportunity to be the first to apply to newly converted ALDI stores," They continued. "In addition, ALDI is committed to doing its best to minimize the impact and provide support and opportunities to associates at converting stores, including the option to remain with Winn-Dixie and transfer to a neighboring store."
