Students and employees at Tuscaloosa Academy spent the day doing public service both on and off their campus.

A Youth Service America survey comparing 2022 and the 2025-2026 school year found that youth volunteering and community service participation increased slightly, from 37% to 39%. Schools also reported offering more service-learning and civic engagement opportunities than before the pandemic. Tuscaloosa Academy did just that today.

A new schoolwide initiative called “TA Serve Day” is bringing every student, faculty and staff member together for a day centered on service and community impact.

Younger students participated in service projects on the TA campus, giving them an opportunity to contribute to their school community in age-appropriate ways. Older students worked with community support organizations away from campus. Across all grade levels, including athletes, projects are designed to help students understand that service can take many forms and that every individual has a role to play.

The day of service began with an all-school kickoff in the TA gym this morning, followed by students dispersing to their service assignments.

They worked through the day on projects on campus and in the community with local organizations. Students working in the community returned to the TA campus for lunch and a time of reflection before the school’s regularly scheduled Friday pep rally.

“Our mission calls us to empower learners to reach excellence in responsibility, service and achievement, and we want our students to experience those values in action,” said Head of School Beckie Share in a media release. “TA Serve Day gives every student the opportunity to contribute, serve others and see the impact they can make.”

According to YSA, learning about community service early helps students grow into caring, engaged and responsible adults while developing practical life skills that benefit both them and their communities.

School officials intend for TA Serve Day to become an annual tradition.
