The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) has begun resurfacing a portion of SR-14 in Hale County from near Holbrook Place to the SR-61 intersection in Greensboro. Work on the $2.4 million, 4.7-mile project will continue until the end of the year, weather permitting.

ALDOT awarded the project to Birmingham's APAC-Alabama, Inc., one of Alabama's largest road construction and asphalt companies. The company produces asphalt, operates quarries and aggregate facilities, and performs highway, street, and infrastructure construction projects throughout the state. It specializes in paving, resurfacing, grading, drainage, and other transportation-related work.

Included in the project is work to remove worn pavement, repair damaged areas, apply a new asphalt surface, make signal upgrades, upgrade roadway markings and improve safety features.

According to a post on the ALDOT Western Division website, the project also includes a road diet on SR-14 from Main Street to Tuscaloosa Street.
The roadway will be reconfigured from four travel lanes to two travel lanes with a two-way center left turn lane. Road diets are a cost-effective safety strategy for traditional four-lane undivided highways and can reduce crashes by up to 47%, according to the Federal Highway Administration.

Lane closures will not be allowed between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. on weekdays when school is in session to reduce the impact on traffic. Drivers should expect possible delays and are encouraged to use caution in the work zone.
