Restaurants and hotels throughout Tuscaloosa have extended a virtual hiring event that aims to fill more than 125 vacant job positions in the area.

Hosted by West Alabama Works, The Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama, Tuscaloosa Tourism and Sports, and Tuscaloosa’s Chapter of the Alabama Restaurant and Hospitality Association, the event is looking to match hundreds of prospective employees with area businesses.

Across the industry, placements are available at hotels including Embassy Suites and Hotel Indigo and restaurants ranging from Central Mesa to Waffle House. All told, 33 local businesses are participating in the event and looking to hire people in need of full-time or part-time employment.

The numerous vacancies in the hospitality industry can be attributed to several factors, including the long-running toll of the pandemic and growing dissatisfaction with minimum wage compensation. What's clear is that dozens of local businesses need employees immediately.

“Job seekers and employers will connect virtually through the West Alabama Works Job Connect platform and will then have the opportunity to interview in person, if requested, at the respective hotel or restaurant,” VP of Marketing and Communications Kelsey Rush said in a press release Monday morning.

As of Monday morning, 343 people have engaged with the online platform, resulting in 164 job applications. After completing the application, someone from the West Alabama Works team will make contact to complete registration.

The deadline to apply was recently extended until Thursday, September 23. For more information, and to create an online profile for the virtual hiring event, click here.
