UA Fraternity Faces Suspension, 4 Others On Probation Over Hazing Violations
Hazing continues to be a major, persistent problem at U.S. colleges and universities, including the University of Alabama. The level of the problem at UA has been revealed by the suspension of one fraternity and four others being placed on probation.
The 2025 Hazing Transparency Report reveals Delta Sigma Phi fraternity has been suspended due to repeated hazing and alcohol violations. This is not Delta Sigma Phi's first experience with violations, which is what led to the more serious suspension. The fraternity had been placed on disciplinary probation during the 2025 spring semester
Theta Chi, Sigma Tau Gamma, and Sigma Phi have been placed on probation until next fall. Delta Sigma Phi was placed on probation until December 31st, 2030, and also lost its chapter house.
The Stop Campus Hazing Act (SCHA) was signed into law on December 23, 2024. It amends the Clery Act to mandate that higher education institutions report hazing incidents, publish transparency reports, and implement prevention programs. It requires universities to include hazing statistics in annual reports and provide research-informed education to combat dangerous initiation rituals.
With over 55% of students in organizations, sports, or teams experiencing hazing in some for and despite state-level bans in 44 states (including Alabama), hazing continues to be a campus problem. It frequently involves high-risk drinking, abuse, and, and humiliation. Most students who are hazing victims never report it
A pledge at the University of Alabama-founded fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon suffered a traumatic head injury while being hazed at the Capstone in 2023.
The University of Alabama has a lengthy Hazing Policy and an in-depth website dealing with all aspects of hazing.
*An earlier version of this story incorrectly identified Delta Kappa Epsilon as a fraternity that lost its chapter house. It was Delta Sigma Phi that had chapter house sanctions.
