Sumter County Cuts Ribbon On New Elementary School
When Sumter County Central Elementary School students start the new school year next Thursday it will be in a brand new school building. Alabama State Schools Superintendent Dr. Eric G. Mackey joined local officials to cut the ribbon on the first new elementary school built in the school district since the 1940s. It is located on Pine Grove Road on the campus of Sumter Central High School.

Ground was broken for the unified campus project in September 2024 under state intervention to replace older, outdated facilities. It will house pre-K through 4th grade.
The new new school is seen as and opportunity to advance the education of youth in a modern facility. "This beautiful new school is more than a building—it is a place where students will learn, grow, dream, and prepare for a successful future. We look forward to the memories, achievements, and traditions that will begin within these walls," the system wrote in a press release.
"The towns of York and Livingston and all of Sumter County have worked together to make sure that their young people have a state-of-the-art learning facility in the years ahead,” said Superintendent Mackey told attendees at the ribbon cutting..
Sumter County Schools Superintendent Marcy Burroughs expressed excitement over the new facility, calling it a long-overdue opportunity.
The school system is offering special attendance incentives to encourage everyone to start the school year strong on day one.
