Tuscaloosa Cuts Ribbon on 19 New Pickleball Courts at Bowers Park
Elected officials and other local leaders were at Tuscaloosa's Bowers Park Monday morning to cut the ribbon on the region's biggest pickleball facility after almost a year of construction.
The upgrades to the park off James I. Harrison Parkway add 19 new courts, a new restroom for park visitors, and upgraded lighting and security cameras, significantly boosting the number of courts available for the fast-growing sport in West Alabama.
The project, funded by the city's Elevate Tuscaloosa sales tax plan, broke ground last April.

"I grew up in Idlewood, not far from here, and rode bikes to Bowers with my friends all the time as a kid," Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox said during the ceremony. "It's memories like those that help drive our investments in quality of place for the next generations, and for today's residents of all ages."
The 170-acre Bowers Park is managed by the Tuscaloosa Park and Recreation Authority and sits in the city's District 6, which is represented by Councilman John Faile. It has long been beloved for its disc golf course, ball fields, pool, and more.
"In addition to the pickleball courts, I am pleased to share that a monument for J Oviatt Bowers has been re-added to the park," said Councilor John Faile. "We have accomplished a lot here, but we are just getting started."
The pickleball courts replace underused tennis courts at the Park.
"I am thrilled at the enthusiasm of our community's pickleball players," Tuscaloosa Park and Recreation Authority Executive Director Brian Davis said. "Our pickleball courts are almost always full, and it brings me joy that our community and visitors are able to enjoy these amenities."
