Police in Tuscaloosa have charged a man with attempted murder and other felonies after he reportedly fired into a vehicle carrying a woman and a one-month-old baby.

Captain Jack Kennedy, the commander of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, said police were called to the scene of a shooting in the 4500 block of 18th Avenue in Tuscaloosa at the Skyland Pointe apartments, formerly known as the Heights at Skyland.

As the Thread reported on Saturday, a woman there suffered head wounds that were originally reported as gunshot wounds, but thankfully were caused by broken car glass, not a direct hit from a bullet.

Kennedy said after an extensive investigation, the VCU believes a large argument broke out at the apartments between two large groups of people, and as some of them tried to leave in a car, their vehicle was surrounded and fired upon.

"The vehicle was occupied by multiple persons including the female that was struck, as well as a 1-month-old child that miraculously was not injured," Kennedy said.

The VCU interviewed witnesses, reviewed video footage of the incident, and processed physical evidence, which has led them to arrest 19-year-old Deangelo Rancher, age 19.

Rancher was charged with Attempted Murder, First-Degree Assault, Shooting into an Occupied Vehicle, and Attempted First-Degree Assault. He was placed in the Tuscaloosa County Jail and is being held with no bond.
