At least one University of Alabama student is reportedly among many nationwide who received a racist text Wednesday referencing an assignment for work picking cotton on a plantation.

Screenshots of the text spread like wildfire on social media on Wednesday, which told the Alabama student that they had been selected to pick cotton at the nearest plantation and that should be ready for pickup by "executive slaves."

As the word of the first incident spread, people chimed in online about other cases of victims receiving the same message.

On Wednesday evening, a spokesperson for the University confirmed they were aware of the texts and said an investigation is ongoing, but the incident is allegedly not an isolated one.

"It is our understanding that individuals across the country have received these disgusting messages. This has been reported to authorities, and we’re asking anyone who may have information regarding these messages to report it to the appropriate authorities," a spokesperson for the University of Alabama said. "UA students who have seen or received such messages are also encouraged to contact the Office of Student Care and Well-Being for any additional support that may be needed."
