Donna Aaron, a former school teacher and Northport City Council member who later became the city's first woman elected to serve as mayor, passed away Sunday at the age of 79.

Aaron began her career as a high school math teacher at Tuscaloosa County High School before serving on the city council.

She was elected as mayor in October 2016, serving only one term and did not seek re-election.
