Investigators in Tuscaloosa County have located and arrested a local woman allegedly responsible for a fatal February hit-and-run in Northport.

As the Thread previously reported, 72-year-old Willie Clay Fleming was found dead on the side of Highway 43 on the evening of February 25th.

He had injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle, and police launched a search for the driver who hit him and left the scene.

The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit was able to link debris found on the scene to the specific make and model of the vehicle involved - a Nissan Pathfinder - then identified a match on surveillance footage around the area where Fleming was fatally struck.

That footage was used to identify the vehicle caught on camera and led police to the Northport home of 58-year-old Wendy Michele Lynn, which they searched after obtaining a warrant.

Court documents say they found a Pathfinder in a barn on the property with shattered windows, missing rearview mirrors, and two flat tires - damage consistent with the deadly hit-and-run.

Lynn was taken to the headquarters of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, where she was charged with Leaving the Scene of an Accident with Injuries or Death.

Captain Jack Kennedy, the commander of the VCU, said police also found an illegal substance when they arrested Lynn and charged her with possession of a controlled substance.

"The case is still under investigation and will also ultimately be heard by a grand jury. These are the initial charges. Additional evidence may lead to an upgrade in charges," Kennedy said Tuesday. "At the onset of this case, there were no witnesses, and no apparent evidence that would lead to the identification of the vehicle or its driver. The hard work and 'never give up' attitude of the investigators in this case led to the suspect being identified and arrested."
