Home Catches Fire After Being Struck by Lightning During Tuesday Night Storm
A home was heavily damaged in a fire after lightning from storms that came through Tuscaloosa struck the residence Tuesday night.
Holly Whigham, a representative for Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue, said shortly after midnight Wednesday, TFR received a request from the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office to assist with the fire, which occurred at a home on Old Greensboro Road
Whigham said six units responded to the scene where a blaze was seen coming from the side and roof of the two-story structure. Englewood Hulls and Moundville Volunteer Fire Departments also assisted with extinguishing the blaze.
No one was in the residence at the time of the fire. Whigham said properly planning for events like this is important to prevent injuries and deaths.
"Lightning strikes can happen to anyone," Whigham said. "As far as fire safety goes, just preparing for that and having working smoke alarms and an escape plan is important."
