Schools in Greene County were secured on Thursday after a possible robbery at the Dollar General in Eutaw, not due to an active shooter on any campus, an administrator said on social media.

All schools within the Greene County School District were placed under Secure Perimeter status on Monday morning, leading to false rumors of an active shooter on one of the campuses spreading fast.

Interim Superintendent Darryl Aikerson posted on Facebook and also arranged calls with parents, assuring them there was no such threat on any campus, but that schools were on heightened security due to an incident at a convenience store in Eutaw.

"There are no active shooters on any GCSD campus," he wrote. "At this time, all students and staff are safe and not in danger."

Aikerson said the decision to secure the perimeters of the schools was made over an incident at the Dollar General in Eutaw, and by limiting entry and exit to school campuses, classes could continue even as law enforcement responded to the incident at the store.

No one at the Greene County Sheriff's Office was immediately available to comment, and other state and local agencies said they have not been called to assist as of Thursday afternoon.
