Walker County Corrections Officer Charged with Selling Contraband to Inmates

A Walker County Corrections Officer has been charged with selling contraband to inmates at the County Jail.

The Walker County Sheriff's Office said 44-year-old Billie Michelle Hester of Adamsville had been employed at the county jail for approximately two months and in that span of time she received over 400 calls from inmates to her personal cell phone.

Hester was found to have brought several cell phones into the jail which she sold to inmates from $250 per phone.

Hester was charged with two counts of third-degree Promoting Prison Contraband. The Walker County Sheriff's Office says the investigation is ongoing and that they anticipate additional charges being filed against Hester.

"We take any allegations of misconduct against our employees seriously. Most of the time those claims are unfounded, especially from inmates, but in this case there was merit to the information we received. When that happens, we treat those cases just like any other and prosecute them to the fullest," said Walker County Sheriff Nick Smith.

"Our employees are not above the law and they know the standard I hold them to when they’re hired here. Unfortunately, things like this happen, but we will use this as a learning and teaching experience for our corrections Officers to show them that we will not tolerate this kind of behavior," Smith added.
