Even in a time of belt-tightening and budget cuts, Tuscaloosa City Schools must have bus drivers and the system is actively hiring for the coming academic year, offering competitive pay and benefits.

TCS announced the hiring initiative Friday and said they're looking for both experienced and new drivers who are committed to safely getting kids to schools all over the city. Ten to 15 new hires are expected.

“We’re looking for individuals who are dependable, safety-focused and ready to make a difference in the lives of our students,” said Mike Daria, Superintendent of Tuscaloosa City Schools. “Our drivers are essential members of our school community.”

The system boasted good pay and great benefits for drivers who are hired.

According to TCS, pay begins at $23.80 per hour, and benefits include health insurance, a retirement plan and paid time off.

All TCS buses now feature air-conditioning, so each machine is comfortable for drivers, and the system offers all the training for drivers, so no prior experience is necessary, although it is certainly not discouraged.

“Whether you’re a veteran driver or just starting out, we’ll support you every step of the way,” said Ron Schappacher, Director of Transportation for Tuscaloosa City Schools. “We offer more than just a job—it’s a chance to serve your community and be a part of something meaningful. With our enhanced fleet and highly competitive pay, now is a great time to join our team.”

Drivers can expect the same schedule week to week, but TCS said they also offer plenty of opportunities for extra income for those who seek it through field trips and other bus rides.

Applications are being accepted now ahead of the new school year, which begins the first week of August.

To learn more or to submit an application, visit the TCS website for prospective drivers here or contact the TCS Transportation Department.
