A young police officer in Greensboro is recovering after a Thursday night gunfight, and the suspect who exchanged shots with him is dead.

The shootout happened shortly after a traffic stop in the Hale County city about 40 miles south of Tuscaloosa.

State Police said the stop happened in the 1000 Block of BLount Street in Greensboro.

The officer, Miguel Edwards, was reportedly stable on Friday morning. The suspect, 64-year-old Robert Williams, has died.

The deadly officer-involved shooting will be investigated by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, not Hale County or Greensboro police. The State Bureau of Investigation is working the case and has reportedly received body camera footage of the incident.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured Greensboro Police Officer and his family as he continues to receive care," ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor said. "What began as a traffic stop, which is never routine, quickly turned into a life-threatening situation, underscoring the dangers officers face every day. Incidents like this weigh heavily on the entire law enforcement community. We are praying for the Officer’s full recovery and will continue to stand alongside the family and fellow officers during this difficult time.”

As the community reels at the loss of life, a prayer service has been planned at Greensboro Presbyterian Church at 5 p.m. Friday.
