Greensboro Pie to Close, Ending 15 Years of PieLab Treats in West Alabama
A West Alabama purveyor of pies will soon close permanently, and although the business is just five years old, its closure will mark the end of a longer era in Greensboro.
Greensboro Pie, LLC, was launched in fall 2020 when owner Thomas Reynolds sought to save the traditions and recipes of the PieLab - a COVID casualty that was founded in 2009 by a group of thinkers from Maine who wanted to push the boundaries of what a bakery could be in a community.
They made famously good pies - good enough to earn a profile in the New York Times Magazine and accolades in Southern Living and Food & Wine. But their space on Highway 69 South in neighboring Hale County was also known for fostering community and conversation, which they saw as the recipe for positive change in the area.
When they had to close in 2020, Reynolds bought their recipes and launched Greensboro Pie, hoping to keep the same spirit alive.

On the business website, Reynolds said he was the son of an HVAC business owner but saw so much value in what PieLab was doing that he traded gauges and drills for whisks and mixers to launch Greensboro Pie and keep their tradition alive.
Years later, Reynolds has announced the difficult decision to close the pie shoppe as he and his family prepare to move away from the area.
"From holiday orders that became family traditions to fundraisers that made a difference
in so many communities, your love for our pies has meant the world to us. Hearing your kind words, seeing the excitement on faces at holiday fairs, and being a small part of your celebrations has been the greatest joy," Reynolds said online. "Thank you for every order, every visit, and every moment you shared with us. We will forever cherish these sweet memories!"
