Drivers in downtown Northport have noted that detours are in place while crews work on repairing and repaving a portion of 5th Street.

The closure, which began Tuesday, will be in place through Friday, June 4 as the City of Northport works on the portion of 5th Street next to Billy's Sports Grill.

Although the repair is only underway for a small portion of the road, crews face a massive task in rebuilding literally brick by brick.

Northport City Council Representative Christy Bobo shared a behind the scenes photo to Facebook, noting that workers are taking tremendous care to preserve the integrity of each historic brick.

"[N]ot many people will realize that each brick’s location has been documented with a numbering system in hope to salvage the original brick to maintain the look of the rest of the intersection," Bobo said.

Bobo also added that the work is being done in the summer heat and expressed her gratitude for the crew.

"We have rock star employees!" Bobo said.

The closure will remain in place through Friday, June 4 and motorists are encouraged to seek an alternate route.
