Burlesque Troupe Brings Rocky Horror Picture Show Back to Tuscaloosa, Alabama

Tuscaloosa's own Pink Box Burlesque Troupe is reviving their annual Halloween night shadow cast of the Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Historic Bama Theatre after the COVID-19 pandemic forced them to call off last year's show.

Mama Dixie, the madam of the Pink Box Burlesque, said her troupe's long absence from the stage has allowed them to plan their best-ever adults-only performance and cap off LGBT History Month in the Druid City.

"Pride month may be in June, but a cornerstone of the LGBTQ celebrations each year is the annual Rocky Horror Picture Show screening. These celebrations happen on an international scale, but in Tuscaloosa, Pink Box Burlesque has championed this toast to Dr. Frankenfurter for 13 years," Dixie said. "We took a pause during the pandemic, and it allowed us to plan for a coming-out party meant to bring the queer community together to celebrate our strengths, toast our loved ones, and share space."

Patrons can expect a tantalizing show on-screen and in-person as the Pink Box performers sing and dance, and tease in time with the film. General admission tickets to the show are $15, and for $6 more, you can reserve a traditional prop bag while supplies last. Fans can opt to make their own bags at home, but food and water-based props are not allowed inside the historic venue of the Bama Theatre, so leave your water guns, toast, hot dogs and prunes at home.

Portions of each ticket sale will be donated to the Invisible Histories Project, which strives to preserve the stories of LGBTQ life in Alabama and eventually the rest of the Southeast.

"This year, we've chosen Invisible Histories Project, an archiving organization that specializes in collecting the history of Southern Queers for future generations to learn," Dixie said. "We lost so much for so long. Having the touchstone of preserved history is, after all, what the annual tradition of Rocky Horror Picture Show is all about."

The 18+ event kicks off at 7:30 p.m. on October 31st. Doors open at 6:30, with a costume contest at 7.
