Mediterranean Sandwich Co., a Mobile-based gyro chain, became the newest restaurant in Tuscaloosa Friday when they opened on The Strip.

The restaurant replaces Holler and Dash, the casual breakfast chain that closed its doors in late 2019. With three locations in Mobile and one more in Daphne, that makes Tuscaloosa the fifth and latest location. The chain is looking to expand into neighboring states soon, according to Christina Helveston, a spokesperson for the sandwich shop.

One step inside the building, and guests can smell a mix of all sorts of specialty meals like The Redneck Gyro, which wraps beef-lamb meat, conecuh sausage, smoked gouda and mozzarella together, and panini-style flatbreads like The Mixed Grill, made of roasted chicken, beef-lamb meat, sweet onion marmalade, mozzarella cheese and béarnaise aioli sauce.

Aside from cosmetic changes, the layout for the interior features a much more open floor plan, with several removed walls to allow for more seating.

Mediterranean Sandwich Co. is currently open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., but Helveston told The Thread the shop is looking to extend its weekend hours to welcome college students after a night out.

"We're looking to extend our hours into the late evening in the coming weeks, which I think a lot of the younger crowd is going to like," she said.

Mediterranean Sandwich Co can be found online on their Facebook page, or at their website here.
