Free Autism C.A.R.E. Summit Coming to Tuscaloosa

Parents and caregivers of individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities will have access to a full day of free resources, education and support during an upcoming conference in Tuscaloosa.

The University of Alabama Regional Autism Network will host the C.A.R.E. Summit on Monday, Sept. 28, at the Bryant Conference Center on the University of Alabama campus. The conference will run from 8 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., with both in-person and virtual attendance options available.

C.A.R.E. stands for Caregivers, Advocacy, Resources and Education, with the summit designed to remove financial barriers that can prevent families from accessing information and support.

Registration is free for parents and caregivers, and meals are included for those attending in person.

Throughout the day, participants will have access to practical, evidence-based sessions addressing challenges families may encounter while supporting individuals with autism and developmental disabilities.

Topics include anxiety and mental health, toilet training, feeding challenges, sensory regulation, assistive technology, school success, IEP advocacy and caregiver wellness. Sessions will also address preparing individuals for the future through discussions about college transition, the transition to adulthood, guardianship and supported decision-making. Resources for twice-exceptional learners and waiver and community services will also be discussed.

The conference is open to more than parents. Grandparents, other family members, caregivers, individuals with autism, teachers, school staff and community partners are also encouraged to participate.

Organizers say the goal is for attendees to leave with practical strategies, trusted resources and connections that can make a difference for their families.
