TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack acknowledged that defensive lineman Terrance Green's absence in the second half hurt the Crimson Tide’s defensive front in its 20-17 loss to Georgia, especially as the Bulldogs found success with explosive runs.

Alabama struggled to contain Georgia’s rushing attack late in the game, allowing four explosive runs and running back Dwight Phillips Jr. to average 7.1 yards per carry, which shifted field position and momentum.

Wommack said Green’s absence presented a challenge for the defense but emphasized that Alabama must be able to adjust when players are unavailable.

“Well, it certainly had an effect,” Wommack said. “Anytime you lose a physical force in there, that's certainly going to be a challenge.”

The defensive coordinator also pointed to the absences of Desmond Umeozulu and Justin Hill, explaining that the injuries limited some of the personnel options available to Alabama, including opportunities to use Devon Tompkins inside as a change of pace.

Despite those challenges, Wommack said the defense must execute better regardless of which players are available.

“The explosive plays that we gave up, we should have executed better to not give up those explosive runs in the second half,” Wommack said.

Wommack acknowledged that Alabama's depth has been tested but said the team must find ways to maximize its available personnel.

“Everybody's dealing with the same stuff right now, right? You got to find a way to maximize your roster even amongst some injuries and guys being out,” Wommack said. “And so that's just what we live in the SEC in the middle of the season.”

The Crimson Tide will face another significant challenge Saturday against Tennessee, led by elite running back DeSean Bishop. Wommack described the Volunteers as a team committed to running the football and generating explosive plays off that foundation.
