Interstate 20/59 Closed for Hazmat Cleaning Near Tuscaloosa, Alabama
An update from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency states that all northbound lanes of I 20/59 between Tuscaloosa and Brookwood remain closed.
Northbound lanes are closed from Exit 79 (Tuscaloosa/Cottondale) to Exit 86 (Brookwood).
"The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) and Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) are currently diverting traffic at Exit 76 on U.S. 11 then back onto I-59 at Exit 89," said ALEA Corporal Jeremy J. Burkett in a Sunday morning statement to media.
Motorists must take US Highway 11 as a detour while the closure remains in place.
Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Traffic Reporter "Captain" Ray Allen says the closure began at midnight and authorities had hoped to have the cleanup completed within several hours.
An accident Friday morning caused the hazmat spill at mile point 81. No further details are available at this time.
