“Gobblecross” Charity Bicycle Race Returns to Tuscaloosa Sunday
A high-energy cyclocross race will bring dozens of bicyclists to north Tuscaloosa on Sunday and raise funds to support programs to help local children discover the joys of cycling.
The GobbleCross returns to the Horse Pens at Munny Sokol Park this Sunday, November 24th, and kicks off at 10 a.m.
David Williams, President of the Druid City Bicycle Club, said he expects as many as 60 or 70 participants to come to compete for prizes and bragging rights, tearing up a short course featuring grass, sand, dirt and more.
"We set up a course that goes over grass, rocks and hills and put up low barriers the races can try to bunnyhop over, or get off their bikes and run up," Williams said.
The race will feature riders of all ages, but Williams said their focus is on juniors, who can run the race for free, and who will benefit from the money raised by sponsorships and paid registrations.
He said funds raised at GobbleCross support programs including the Little Bellas, the Tuscaloosa Mountain Flyers, the Hank Poore Foundation, the ARC of Tuscaloosa, the West Alabama Mountain Biking Association and the Police Athletic League, all of which aim to improve the lives of young people in the area.
Williams said cyclocross competitors often make last-minute, weather-based decisions about which races to run, but Sunday is forecast to be a gorgeous fall day with low temps above 50 degrees and highs below 70.
