Today is the last day for CHOOSE Act applications in Alabama. The Creating Hope and Opportunity for Our Students' Education Act of 2024 is Alabama's landmark school choice program, which Gov. Kay Ivey proposed and then signed into law in March 2024. The initiative provides educational savings accounts (ESAs) as refundable tax credits—$7,000 for private school or $2,000 for homeschooling—to help families pay for tuition, tutoring, and other expenses

Families participating in the CHOOSE Act during the 2025-26 school year are eligible to continue in 2026-27, but they must complete a renewal application by midnight tonight.

Families that did not apply for the 2025-26 school year or were not awarded funding also have a midnight deadline to apply for the 2026-27 school year through the application link on the program's website today.

Students will not be eligible for the 2026-2027 academic year if an application is not received by tonight.

Last year the program provided ESA funding for students in every county across the state.

“The CHOOSE Act is giving families across our state the opportunity to choose the education that best fits their children’s needs,” Ivey was quoted as saying in a press release.

During her January State of the State Address, Ivey called for expansions to the voucher-like school program from $180 million to $250 million. The controversial House Bill 235 is currently making its way through the legislature with only six days remaining in the session.

The CHOOSE ACT has its detractors, they argue the program diverts funding from Alabama’s public schools into the hands of private institutions at a time that the funds are critical to continued improvement.

271 schools across the state are enrolled in Governor Ivey’s CHOOSE ACT Program. 15 of those schools are located in West Alabama, they are:
