District counselors and mental health professionals were at West Blocton Middle School on Friday after the shooting death of one of its students the day before.
The student’s body was found in the 200 block of Hickory Street. He was pronounced deceased on the scene.
The school has 382 students in fifth through eighth grade, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. The distance between the school and where the young male's body was found is three miles.

West Blocton Middle School released a statement to parents saying the loss of a beloved student has deeply impacted the West Blocton Middle family:
"We know our students and staff will react in different ways to this tragic loss. We all should expect to try and understand that there will be a variety of emotions and responses to what has occurred. The most important thing we can do is to be supportive and encourage our West Blocton family.
Supporting each other is what WBMS does best. We are a close-knit family. We will rally together and help each other navigate this loss.
At West Blocton Middle, we have implemented a plan for responding to this tragic event. Our students always come first. Our plan is focused on helping our students and their families get back to regular learning and everyday activities as soon as possible. I am grateful for our school counselors and mental health professionals that have aided in our response plan. I assure you; our children are the main focus of our response.
Our teachers and counselors have been briefed on our plans and have received guidelines for discussing death and reactions to it. There were district counselors and mental health professionals available to students and faculty. They will also be here on-site Friday to assist students and faculty members who need support. We will try to maintain a normal routine and structure as we move forward. We know this is what is best for the students, and we are dedicated to meeting the needs of our students.
If you feel that your child or family needs some assistance, please contact us, and we will do everything we can to help you. We are here to offer support to everyone as we go through this grieving process.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school at (205) 938-2451. Our hearts and prayers go out to all of the family members affected by this tragic event. We know you will join us in our concern, prayers, and sympathy for this precious family."
ALEA's State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is investigating the case but has released no further details, including whether there is a suspect or suspects.
In a Facebook press release, the West Blocton Police stated, "This remains an active and ongoing investigation. Any questions or requests for additional information should be directed to ALEA."
West Blocton authorities believe there is no threat to the community.
