Tuscaloosa Man Charged With Murder When Allegedly Abused Baby Dies Sunday
A Tuscaloosa man has been charged with murder after an infant he allegedly abused died on Sunday.
Captain Jack Kennedy, the commander of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, told local media that police were alerted when an unresponsive 1-year-old girl was taken to DCH Regional Medical Center on Thursday.

Kennedy said the child exhibited signs of a brain injury and was flown to Children’s of Alabama hospital in Birmingham. Medical experts there said the injuries appeared to be the result of physical abuse.
The VCU began investigating, and found at the time of the injury, the infant was left alone with 30-year-old Devonte Crumel, who is the boyfriend of the girl's mother.
"Crumel could give no explanation for how the injury occurred," Kennedy said.
Court documents obtained by the Thread say he told investigators that the baby had been crying and he became frustrated, then left the room to smoke marijuana and returned to find her unresponsive.
Crumel was arrested last week and charged with Aggravated Child Abuse but Kennedy said on Sunday, the VCU was notified that the child had not survived their injuries and had passed away.
The 30-year-old suspect has now been charged with Murder and remains in the county jail with no bond pursuant to Aniah’s Law.
This is the second homicide investigated by the VCU in 2025.
