
NWS Birmingham Teams Investigate Friday Severe Weather
Survey teams from the national Weather Service in Birmingham continue to examine areas across Central Alabama that could have seen tornado acivity during last Fridays strong to severe thunderstorms. No injuries and minor damage were the results were reported from four tornado paths Friday.

The team submitted the follow survey report:
- The first tornado was along and across the Marengo and Hail County lines where an EF1 with top winds 95 mph touched down. The path length was 2.27 miles with a path width of150 yards. The tornado touched down at 10:43 a.m. Friday along Sparks Road, east of Demopolis and near the Marengo County/Hale County line. The tornado caused minor damage to several homes but also flipped a box truck and a pontoon boat.
- The second tornado was an EF0 with top winds of 65 mph. The path length was 0.23 miles and path width was 40 yards. The tornado touched down at 10:47 a.m. Friday along County Road 6, between County Road 7 and Lewis Road. The storm shifted a camper off its supports and caused minor damage to a manufactured home.
- The meteorologist's study found around 12:13 p.m., a tornado first touched down about three miles north of Vance. It had a path length of 2.65 miles and a path width of 150 yards. The storm dissapated around 12:21 p.m. about three miles south of Abernant. They estimated the highest winds from the storm were around 95 mph. The majority of damage was to trees and powerlines with no significant structural damage.
- A fourth twister occurred in Cullman County. The EF1 had top winds 107 mph and its path length was 8.7 miles with a path width 300 yards. The tornado touched down at 12:57 p.m. Friday just north of U.S. Highway 278 and west of Holly Pond near the intersection of County Roads 1650 and 1682. The tornado damaged trees, caused some damage to homes and outbuildings and killed two cows due to fallen trees. A mobile home was pushed off its foundation, and a tree fell onto a truck.
So far this year there have been 25 tornadoes recorded in Alabama with none stronger than EF-2 (111-135mph winds).
There is a Moderate (1 in 5) Risk for strong to sever storms with a brief tornado possible from now through earlier Memorial Day evening.
