The National Weather Service is forecasting a low-end chance for strong to severe storms to develop in northwest Alabama Thursday night, including a minor threat of isolated tornadoes.

The NWS issued forecast guidance around noon on Thursday, warning that as a cold front moves into Alabama from the west, showers and storms are likely to form ahead of that cooler air.

Meteorologists say if enough unstable air at ground level meets wind shear aloft, there is a low chance for some of those storms to be severe.

If strong storms do form, they could have isolated, damaging wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour, and the possibility of isolated, brief tornadoes cannot be ruled out.

The threat applies to the western and northwestern counties of Alabama, including much of our coverage area.

The time of highest threat is from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., with storms weakening substantially by midnight.
