Potential Severe Weather Threat for Alabama Could Help Dry Spell

Wednesday, you can expect a mostly cloudy day, showers, and thunderstorms. We are monitoring the potential for severe weather action with storms along the cold front.

James Spann, ABC 33/40, and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Chief Meteorologist said that the “Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has expanded the "marginal risk" (level 1/5) of severe thunderstorms to include areas as far south as Thomasville, Prattville, and Wedowee.”

Spann provides more insight about tomorrow, in that “model data suggests there could be enough shear for a few rotating updrafts, meaning the risk of a brief isolated tornado or two. Strong storms will also be capable of producing strong straight-line winds and some small hail. The main window for heavier storms will come from about 3:00 p.m. tomorrow through 3:00 a.m. Thursday.”

Positive Outlook

Even though the projected rain totals are between ½ to 1 inch with some areas receiving more rain this could help our dry spell. According to Spann, “from data from Birmingham:

This will be the 16th consecutive day with no measurable rain.
There has been no measurable rain on 29 out of the last 30 days.
The last measurable rain was on September 25, and the total was only 0.03 inches.
The last really big rain day here was on September 4, when the total was 1.55 inches.
