The pedestrian struck by a vehicle on 15th street Wednesday night has been identified.

Juan Lucas, 33, of Tuscaloosa was seriously injured after he was hit by a driver traveling east on 15th Street around 8:15 p.m. The driver saw Lucas standing in the roadway near its intersection with 33rd avenue, but was unable to stop before striking him.

The driver and several witnesses stated he was driving around 35 miles per hour.

Stephanie Taylor, a spokesperson for the Tuscaloosa Police Department, said Lucas was then transported to DCH Regional Medical Center for treatment. Lucas was pronounced dead at 1:42 a.m. Thursday.

Taylor said TPD's Accident Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene, spoke to witnesses and are in the process of conducting a thorough investigation. At this time, TPD does not anticipate any criminal charges being filed.
