The Northport City Council unanimously adopted the city's two major budgets for the 2026 fiscal year on Monday. The operational budget is $51.2 million, and the water and sewer budget is listed at $12.7 million.

The general fund budget would increase by some $3 million above the $48 million of the FY 2025 budget. The proposed $12 million water and sewer budget is roughly the same as this year's.

Additionally, a 1% projected revenue increase will help cover a 6% cost-of-living adjustment for city employees in the new budget. Of several departments set to receive pay hikes, Northport Fire/Rescue will see a proposed salary increase from $6.2 million to $7.2 million.

Northport City Administrator Glenda Webb noted that the general fund budget has grown over the last four years, from $35 million to this coming fiscal year's $51 million. The outgoing leader cited the growth as evidence that the city is prospering.

In other council business last night, it was announced that the incoming city council has decided not to form committees as has been the past practice. Instead, the newly elected council will conduct work sessions.

Also, as expected, the council voted, on a 4-1 vote, to approve a resolution for the city administrator to execute a $42,000 agreement with the Southeastern Network of Athletic Professionals Sports Tourism Consulting for representation of the Northport Shore complex. It had been suggested that the vote be delayed for action by the new council when they are seated in November.

The council also approved a flow monitoring study in Northport. The study involved the city deploying monitors in the field to track the flow of water through Northport's sanitary sewer system.
