
Greensboro Avenue Streetscape Project On Schedule
With the bulk of students at the University of Alabama out of town for the summer, downtown Tuscaloosa became a work zone in May. This $4.3 million Elevate Tuscaloosa project is to improve pedestrian access and safety in the downtown area with wider sidewalks, landscaping, and safety improvements is on track.
Completed Work
- Phase One and Phase Two of the project is substantially complete according to the city. A progress report states, "The northbound lane of Greensboro Avenue, the adjacent bay parking and the sidewalk between Gary Fitts Street and University Boulevard were reopened last Friday." Gas relocation has also been completed.
- Within the Phase Three and Four areas, sidewalk construction has been finished between Swag and the former Downtown Trading Company.
- Refurbishment of traffic signals and light poles is almost complete, and signage has already been updated in the entire reconstruction area.
Current Work
- Roadway work in the Phase Three and Phase Four work zones should be substantially complete by Friday.
- Demolition, utility and new sidewalk construction is continuing in the Phase Three and Phase Four areas.
- Motorist will find northbound Greensboro lanes between 7th Street and Gary Fitts Street now closed.
- The 7th Street and Greensboro intersection will reopen Friday.
- The Gary Fitts Street and Greensboro intersection will be completed by Friday.
- The inside southbound lane of Greensboro Avenue between 7th Street and Gary Fitts Street is closed for the duration of the project.
- The northeast quadrant of the Greensboro and 7th Street intersection is closed until Friday.
- The Gary Fitts Street and Greensboro Avenue will be closed Thursday and Friday.
- To assist downtown businesses and shoppers, the sidewalk along the eastside of Greensboro Avenue will remain open between 7th Street and Gary Fitts Street.
- The sidewalk south of The Trunk is currently closed between The Trunk and 7th Street adjacent to the vacant buildings.
- Gary Fitts Street is expected to remain closed between the Shirt Shop and Swag until this coming Sunday.
Future Work
- The southbound lanes of Greensboro Avenue between University Blvd. and Gary Fitts Street will be closed within the Phase 5 and Phase Six areas starting a week from today.
The city notes it has made extra efforts to keep pedestrian and local business access open during the project. The project is expected to be complete by the first Alabama Football weekend the first week of September.
