Violent Crimes Unit Investigating Shooting at Tuscaloosa County Gas Station

Police are on the scene of a shooting at a gas station on Highway 69 South in Tuscaloosa County.

A spokesperson for the Tuscaloosa Police Department confirmed that their officers and Violent Crimes Unit investigators are headed at the scene of the Circle K gas station at Highway 69 South and Bear Creek Road near the Piggly Wiggly.

They said a shooting occurred in the parking lot, and there is at least one male victim.

UPDATE, 8:30 p.m.: Captain Jack Kennedy, the commander of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, said in a late evening update that the shooting may have happened during the course of an attempted robbery.

Kennedy said TPD responded to the gas station at about 5:45 p.m., where one person was suffering from critical injuries after being shot.

"All subjects stayed on scene and were contacted by responding police officers," Kennedy said. "After interviewing witnesses and processing the scene for physical evidence, initial investigation shows that the shooting may have been in self-defense during a possible robbery attempt. Surveillance video from the business corroborates the witness statements. At this time, no one has been charged, but the investigation is ongoing."
