Man Shot at Tuscaloosa Park Likely to Survive, Police Ask for Public’s Tips
Police in Tuscaloosa say a man who was critically wounded in a shooting at an area park Saturday night will likely survive his injuries and investigators are asking for help figuring out who fired the shot that almost killed him.
Stephanie Taylor, a spokesperson for the Tuscaloosa Police Department, said a 61-year-old man was shot around 9:15 p.m. Saturday at Jaycee Park on Kicker Road in Alberta.
The victim was found near the park bathrooms and was kept alive by TPD officers and Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue paramedics until he could be taken to DCH Regional Medical Center for treatment.
"While his injuries were serious, it appears the victim will survive," Taylor said.
TPD and the multi-agency Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit are still working to determine how and why the shooting happened - there was a large gathering of people at Jaycee Park Saturday night, and Taylor said witnesses reported hearing several gunshots that may have been fired from multiple weapons.
The man who was shot told police he was with a group of friends and began to run when the first shots rang out, but was struck while racing through the parking lot near the bathrooms.
Taylor said two people have also reported bullet damage to vehicles which were parked in the area Saturday night, but unoccupied when they were shot.
Anyone with information on this shooting or the events which led up to it is asked to urged the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit at 205-464-8690 or leave an anonymous tip by calling CrimeStoppers at 205-752-7867.
