Jordan Battle named to Thorpe Award Watchlist
All-American safety Jordan Battle is another in a long line of Alabama Crimson Tide defensive backs who have been named to the Thorpe Award Watchlist amongst five others from the SEC on Monday. Battle is regarded as one of the top defensive backs in the nation and is very deserving of this nomination.
The honor is named after Jim Thorpe, who was the first Native American Olympic gold medalist. In addition to earning gold at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, Thorpe also played professional baseball, basketball, and football. Additionally, Thorpe was nominally the first president of the American National Football Association which later became the National Football League.
The Thorpe Award is annually given to the nations best defensive back. Previously, Alabama has had two Thorpe Award winners. Minkah Fitzpatrick (2017) and Antonio Langham (1993). Fitzpatrick was drafted 11th overall by the Miami Dolphins and is currently on the Pittsburgh Steelers. Langham was drafted 9th overall by the Cleveland Browns and bounced around between three other teams before calling it a career in 2000.
Battle is set up to be a leader on an Alabama defense that has the potential to be one of the best in the Saban era. Battle brings intensity to the 'Bama defense with his brutal hits, top-notch instincts, and steady leadership. During the 2021-22 season, Battle racked up 86 total tackles, 3 interceptions, 6 passes defended and had 2 touchdowns.
Battle is poised to have an incredible senior season in the hopes he can help bring a 19th national title to the Capstone.
