It wasn't trauma or assault-type injuries that killed 4-year-old Johnathan Boley last week in Walker County. However, an autopsy performed this morning did not return a definitive cause of death.

Sheriff Nick Smith updated the case during a media briefing today, saying further tests are being done in an effort to determine the cause of death of the youngster who disappeared on New Year's Eve morning while playing in the yard of his father's house north of Jasper.

The child's brother, Issac, told authorities he last saw his brother with the family Labrador Retriever Buck at the fence line of the property next to a wooded area around 11:30am Wednesday.  A call to authorities sparked a massive search involving federal, state and local first responders as well as hundreds of volunteers.

It was one of those community volunteers who discovered the body of "Jon Jon" as he was called partially in a body of water is a wooded area. The family dog was alive and next to the boy's body.

The child's death and subsequent arrest of his father Jameson "Kyle" Boley on unrelated charges of unlawful manufacture of a destructive device and chemical endangerment of a child has left the unincorporated community in grief and disbelief. A vigil was conducted Cornerstone Church in the boys for Johnathan last Friday night.

Johnathan’s father was booked into the Walker County Jail then transferred to from the Walker County Jail to Blount County because of the high-profile nature of the case.

"Once an official cause of death has been determined the results and other information will be compiled and turned over to the district attorney for any further actions," Sheriff Smith stated.
