The City of Tuscaloosa is once again being recognized for its financial stability after earning top marks from two major national credit agencies.

According to the press release, the City of Tuscaloosa has received a reaffirmation of its AAA credit rating from Fitch Ratings along with its Aa1 rating from Moody’s Investor Service following reviews conducted in March 2026.

The AAA designation is the highest credit rating a municipality can receive nationwide. Only two other Alabama cities, Hoover and Huntsville, currently hold that distinction from a national rating agency.

According to the press release, Fitch pointed to several factors that helped Tuscaloosa maintain its strong rating, including solid budget flexibility and strong control over revenue. The report also highlighted the city’s decision to strengthen its reserve fund policy, increasing the undesignated reserve balance from 10 percent to 20 percent of general fund expenditures.

Moody’s also noted the city’s strong financial position.

According to the press release, the agency praised Tuscaloosa’s “conservative budgeting and prudent fiscal management,” while also recognizing the city’s expanding local economy and continued growth in operations and financial reserves.

Mayor Walt Maddox said the ratings reflect years of careful financial management and teamwork across city leadership.

“I am proud that the City of Tuscaloosa has once again earned these exceptional ratings from Fitch and Moody’s,” Maddox said according to the press release. “This reflects our continued commitment to responsible financial stewardship and the tireless work of our Accounting and Finance team and City Council.”
