Mayor Appoints 21-Year Veteran As Acting Tuscaloosa Fire Chief
A familiar face with more than twenty years of experience in the department will serve as the Acting Chief of Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue until a permanent hire is identified.
Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox announced on Friday that he has appointed Captain Hollis Baughn to lead TFR for the near future.
Baughn has spent 21 years working for the fire department and has been a captain there since 2018. He steps into the role as Chief Randy Smith is set to retire on November 22nd, next Friday.
“Captain Baughn brings to this position a wealth of front-line experience. His knowledge and passion for serving our citizens is contagious and I look forward to working with him in the following months,” Mayor Walt Maddox said. "I am confident that Captain Baughn is the right person to hold this foundation steady as we execute a national search for the next Fire Chief for our City.”
Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue employs about 280 people, and the lion's share are certified firefighting personnel. Mayor Maddox said the city will conduct a nationwide search for Chief Smith's permanent successor.
