Tide Softball Smashes Shelton State
The 2023-24Alabama softball opened its fall schedule Sunday afternoon by sweeping a doubleheader against Shelton State, winning 18-2 and 10-0. The Crimson Tide scored at least one run in every inning it came to bat in both games.
Highlights included veterans Jenna Johnson, Bailey Dowling and Abby Duchscherer each producing three RBIs in the first game while combining to go 7-for-10 with a double, two triples and six runs scored.
Also, infielder Emma Broadfoot was a single shy of the cycle in game two, going 3-for-3 with a home run, triple and double while driving in four runs.
Amd who went yard? The first home run of the day came from Lauren Esman in game one, a two-run shot in the sixth inning.
Transfer pitcher Kayla Beaver threw four perfect innings to start game one, including four strikeouts She's been hitting 70 MPH on the practice radar gun, and those are Montana Fouts numbers.
Freshman pitcher ocelyn Briski and veteran Jaala Torrence threw a combined shutout in game two, striking out eight with just three base runners allowed.
Other Tiders who had multi-hit games included Kali Heivilin, Lauren Johnson and Riley Valentine in game one and Kenleigh Cahalan, Kat Grill and Kristen White in game two. Lauren Johnson is the freshman younger sister of Jenna.
Fun fact: Bama welcomed back softball alum Leona Lafaele (2013-16), who is on the Shelton State coaching staff.
Next up on the Fall Ball slate is another double dip, set for this Sunday, Oct. 15 at Rhoads Stadium, with the first pitch set for 1 p.m. CT.
