Auburn Dodges a Bullet With Johni Broome only Suffering a Non-Surgical Ankle Sprain
Tiger standout guard Johni Broome underwent an MRI on his ankle after Auburn defeated South Carolina 66-63 on the road on Saturday. The Tigers then returned to Auburn. The good news for Auburn and Broome is that the MRI revealed that Broome had a non-surgical ankle sprain.

Broome departed Saturday's game at 13:45 in the second half after landing on teammate Chaney Johnson's foot while contesting a layup. This caused Broome to roll his ankle. Following the win, Auburn men's basketball coach Bruce Pearl told the SEC Network that Broome had suffered a "significant sprain" to his ankle.
This is fantastic news for Broome, who is currently among the front-runners for the National Player of the Year award. The All-American is currently leading the SEC in rebounds per game, averaging 11.2 per game as a fifth-year senior from Plant City, Florida, and he is currently second in the SEC in points per game, averaging 18.7 per game. The Auburn Tigers, who have a difficult SEC stretch ahead of them, will not have to be without their star big man for long, as they play #14 Mississippi State, #1 Tennessee, and Georgia in their next three games.
Pearl and his staff have not set a timeline for Broome's return, but according to Matt Norlander of CBS Sports, the All-American should be back "in the next week, at minimum." Sprained ankles typically heal quickly, especially if they are minor sprains.
Next Tuesday, January 14, 2025, Auburn will host 14th-ranked Mississippi State at Neville Arena. Broome's ankle strain will keep him out of this game and probably the rest of the week.
