Alabama Basketball Loses Assistant to Arkansas State

The Alabama basketball program is losing a second assistant coach this offseason. The Crimson Tide is losing assistant coach Bryan Hodgson to Arkansas State according to Jeff Goodman of watchstadium.com. 

Hodgson is the second Alabama assistant to take a head coaching position after Charlie Henry accepted the head coaching role with the Georgia Southern Eagles.

The Red Wolves were 13-20 in 2023, finishing 13th place in the Sun Belt conference. Arkansas State last made the NCAA Tournament in 1999, meaning Hodgson has a big job on his hands as he takes over in Jonesboro, AK.

Hodgson has been an assistant with Alabama head coach Nate Oats dating back to their time at Buffalo. He has primarily been in charge of recruiting for Oats and developing post players.

“Bryan is one of the best recruiters I’ve been around,” Oats said. “I initially hired him at Buffalo and he quickly proved that was one of the best decisions I made. He was able to get high-level talent, and he’s got an eye for talent. He knows exactly how we want to play so there’s a chemistry there in terms of knowing who we want to bring in and what type of player we need.”

The Crimson Tide have consistently brought in top-15 ranked classes in basketball since Oats has been in charge, with a specific highlight on the 2022 class that was considered the No. 4 class in the nation.

Oats now has to replace both Henry and Hodgson heading into the 2023-24 basketball season.
