A group of volunteers will gather at one of Tuscaloosa's natural treasures, Hurricane Creek, next weekend to remove litter, tires, and other trash from the waterway during an annual cleanup.

The Friends of Hurricane Creek, a nonprofit committed to protecting the biologically diverse wonderland, organizes the cleanup every year and has done so for more than 30 years.

On Saturday, April 25th, they will meet up at the Watson's Bend Campground for coffee and instructions, then a few groups will split up from there. The Campground is off Holt Peterson Road.

Some volunteers with their own canoes and kayaks will take to the creek itself and pull trash from the water. Other groups will walk the roads near Hurricane Creek Park and remove litter from the roadside.

The Clean Up meeting begins at 8:30 a.m. next Saturday, and the efforts should be wrapped up by noon or 1 p.m.

A barbecue lunch will be provided back at the Watson's Bend Campground, which will also serve as the take-out point for those who will float the Creek.

Volunteers should bring gloves and litter grabbers if they have them - onion sacks for litter will be provided to serve as trash bags so any water on the litter can drain out.

You can register to participate by using the Friends' web form here.
