A conservationist group dedicated to Tuscaloosa's Hurricane Creek will meet at a local church next week to discuss its beauty and history, and to recruit new members to help protect it.

The Friends of Hurricane Creek, led by longtime Creekeeper John Wathen, will meet on at 6 p.m. Tuesday, January 28th, at the First Christian Church Fellowship Hall on Paul Bryant Drive.

Wathen said the Creek is the southernmost free-flowing stream of the Appalachian mountains. It's over 30 miles long and offers hiking trails, picnic spots, swimming holes and year-round beauty, especially accessible in and around Hurricane Creek Park in Tuscaloosa.

That beauty and wonder is sometimes threatened, though - as Creekeepter, Wathen is the enforcement and advocacy arm of the FOHC works diligently to protect it from threats such as pollution from wastewater and graffiti on its ancient stones.

Next week, Wathen will outline the Friends of Hurricane Creek's mission and their vision for the future, all over a potluck dinner in the church's fellowship hall.
