Memorial Day Travel Brings Rising Gas Prices
A lot of people on the highways and at the airports are not the only problems facing Memorial Day weekend travelers. The cost of filling up and that airline ticket will take a chunk out of your bank account.
39.1 million will be hitting the nation’s highways and driving at least 50 miles according to Triple-A estimate and each gallon of gas they use will average $4.55 a gallon nationwide and $4.16 a gallon in Alabama. Although the rise in gas prices has slowed in recent weeks, it is still the highest at the pump over the last four Memorial Day Holidays.

Triple-A also forecasts with gasoline demand on the rise and the prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz due to the U.S. - Iran Conflict, pump prices are likely to remain elevated as the summer travel season gets underway. Unless that is a quickly peace and reopening of Hormuz, those high gas prices could stick around to or past Labor Day.
Traveling across the south is the cheapest for a fill-up according to today's Triple-A price check. Seven of the 10 least expensive states are in the southeast.
Mississippi has the lowest price ($4.01) followed by Georgia ($4.03), Indiana ($4.04), Louisiana ($4.05), Texas ($4.09), Oklahoma ($4.09), Kansas ($4.11), Arkansas ($4.12), Alabama ($4.17), and South Carolina ($4.17).
In West Alabama, Tuscaloosa County sits at $4.14 a gallon up 9-cents over a week ago. Lamar County's $4.07 is the lowest price gas entering the holiday weekend with Perry County's $4.33 the most expensive.
Triple-A advises motorist to pay attention to gas station prices and look for the lowest to save money while on the road. Spokesman Clay Ingram also points out, having your vehicle in good working condition can save you money.
Have a happy and safe unofficial start to the summer driving season!
